The basis of the book was a series of dispatches sent to the Daily Oklahoman newspaper in Oklahoma City by former reporter and Army Captain, Ben H. Chastaine. Made up of men from Texas and Oklahoma National Guard units, the book tells the story of the division from its formation at Camp Bowie, Texas, through training, and into combat in France.
